On Whirlpool's compact front load washer, Clean Filter means waste water is not being pumped out. Whirlpool lists a kinked or blocked drain hose, a frozen drain line, a blocked filter, or a blocked pump as the possible causes behind the message. Whirlpool home appliance display · also shown as CLEAN FILTER What to do when Clean Filter shows on the home appliance ### Kind of code Water, fill and drain Water is arriving too slowly or leaving too slowly, and the cause is usually something that collects over time: a washer drain filter holding lint, coins and hair, a dishwasher sump filter full of food, inlet screens clogged with grit from the supply, or too much detergent leaving suds the machine cannot rinse. Clear the filter over a tray with the machine unplugged, check that the supply valves are fully open, run a cleaning cycle, and book a visit if the hose itself leaks or bulges. ### Usually leads to Drum seal and drain filter cleaning The door boot, drain filter, detergent drawer and fill hoses on the washer cleaned and checked, and the machine leveled. ### Shows up as Appliance Maintenance Code or Reminder Light: Filter, Descale, Vent Check An appliance maintenance code is a reminder, icon or short code on a display asking for a filter change, descaling, a tub clean, rinse aid or an exhaust check rather than reporting a broken part. ### Make Whirlpool Whirlpool appliances fill kitchens and laundry rooms across the country, and most of their upkeep is simple: filters rinsed or changed, coils brushed, lint paths cleared. ### Source Whirlpool support: Clean Filter error code, Compact Front Load Washer Documented specifically for Whirlpool's Compact Front Load Washer. ## Before you book, in this order. Each step comes from Whirlpool's own guidance for Clean Filter on its home appliances. Follow it to the end: the last card says whether this is a visit. 01 Check the drain hose for kinks along its full length. 02 Confirm the washer is installed in a room at least 41°F (5°C); a cold room can freeze residual water in the line. 03 Clean the drain pump filter as described in the owner's manual's draining and filter-cleaning section. 04 Touch Start/Pause after clearing the filter; if the message returns, book a visit rather than force additional cycles. ### Still there? It usually turns into [drum seal and drain filter cleaning](https://appliancemaintenance.center/services/drum-seal-and-drain-filter-cleaning/). Book with the code and the model number. ### What not to do Clean Filter is a drainage alert tied to the pump filter and hose, not the lint or vent system that a dryer uses. It is unrelated to the AF / Check Vent alert on Whirlpool's dryers even though both are cleared by clearing a blockage. ## What you may notice with it. Check the drain hose for kinks along its full length. If it comes back, it needs a visit. ### Does Clean Filter on my compact Whirlpool machine mean the lint filter is dirty? No — this washer's Clean Filter message is about the drain pump filter and drain hose, not a lint screen. Whirlpool ties it to waste water that cannot be pumped out. ### My Whirlpool compact machine is in an unheated laundry closet — could that cause Clean Filter? Yes. Whirlpool notes the washer needs a room temperature of at least 41°F (5°C); residual water in the line can freeze in a colder space and trigger the same drainage alert. ### I cleared the filter but Clean Filter came back on my Whirlpool machine — what now? After clearing it, touch Start/Pause to resume; if the message returns, Whirlpool's own guidance is to contact support or schedule service rather than keep clearing the same blockage repeatedly. --- **[Read on the site: Whirlpool Clean Filter: the compact front load machine cannot pump out](https://appliancemaintenance.center/error-codes/whirlpool-clean-filter-compact-washer/)** **[Book a visit with ApplianceMaintenance.center](https://appliancemaintenance.center/schedule/)**
