# Reminder lights and clean codes: when the display is asking for upkeep

Appliance reminder lights ask for upkeep, not repair: a water filter indicator, a clean-washer or self-clean prompt, a dish filter light, a blinking CL for a dirty condenser, a hood filter icon after 100 hours, or a d80-style exhaust warning. Do the job the light names, then reset it; clearing the light without the job only restarts the countdown.

## At a glance.

A growing share of what appears on an appliance display is not an error at all. It is the machine keeping its own maintenance calendar, and the right response is a cleaning job, not a service call about a broken part.

## A reminder or a failure: how to tell them apart

Makers use the display for two different conversations. One is a timer or a sensor saying that routine work is due: a filter has reached its months, a tub has reached its wash count, a hood has run its hours. The other is a code that means a part or a circuit is not behaving. The first kind belongs to the owner and to a maintenance visit; the second belongs to a repair.

The wording usually gives it away. Reminders name a task in plain words or with an icon: filter, clean, descale, rinse aid, check vent. Failure codes are more often a letter and a number with no task attached. When a code is not obviously a request, look it up on our error code pages or in the manual before doing anything else.

### Counters and sensors behave differently

A counter-based reminder, such as a filter light that runs on months or a hood icon that runs on fan hours, lights whether or not the part is dirty; it guesses from use. A sensor-based warning, such as an exhaust restriction reading, measures the problem directly. A counter can be early in a light-use home; a sensor warning should never be dismissed as early.

## Cold storage prompts: filter and coil

The most common reminder in any kitchen is the water filter light. Whirlpool's guidance is to change the filter when the status indicator on the control panel says so, and on models without a light to change it every six months. Resetting the light is part of the job on most units, and the manual for your model gives the button or hold time.

Some built-in refrigerators also remind owners about the condenser. Viking's built-in column manual says the temperature display blinks CL when it is time to clean the condenser coil, and its maker recommends that cleaning every six months.

### What a coil prompt involves on a built-in column

The Viking manual walks through the job in a handful of moves. It is simple, but it means working at floor level beside a fan and a coil that were running a minute earlier, which is why many owners hand it to the visit.

- Turn off the unit's main power switch behind the top access panel
- Pull the bottom freezer drawer all the way out and lift it free
- Loosen the kick plate screws and slide the plate off
- Vacuum the front face of the coil with a narrow attachment
- Refit the panels and drawer, switch the main power back on and replace the top access panel

## Laundry prompts: tub cleaning, drain filter and exhaust

Washers count loads. Samsung's Self Clean reminder lights after 20 washes on a top-load model or 40 on a front-load model, and Samsung recommends running Self Clean about once a month. Whirlpool asks for a monthly clean, and sooner when the clean washer indicator comes on or an odor appears, using the Clean Washer cycle or the hottest, fullest cycle on models without one.

Dryers measure airflow. GE's Check Vent light points to reduced airflow from a full lint filter, kinked or blocked ducting or a stuck outside damper. LG's d75, d80, d90 and d95 codes report how restricted the exhaust has become, and LG adds that two or four bars on its Flow Sense indicator mean the exhaust is severely restricted.

### An exhaust warning is not a reminder to postpone

Of all the prompts in this guide, the exhaust warnings are the ones not to reset and ignore. A restricted duct means hot, lint-laden air is staying in the machine and the run behind it, which is the path to the dryer fires NFPA attributes mainly to a failure to clean. Clean the lint screen, check the flap outside, and book the duct cleaning if the warning returns.

## Kitchen prompts: dish filter, rinse aid, hood and descale

Whirlpool notes that some of its dishwashers have a Clean Filter indicator that signals when to take out the filter and rinse it; on other models the filter needs no routine cleaning at all, so the manual decides. A rinse aid light simply means the dispenser is low.

Above the cooktop, Wolf's V Series hoods light a filter icon after 100 hours of fan use, and the owner washes the filters and then holds the icon for five seconds to reset it. Steam ovens and built-in coffee systems ask to be descaled; for Wolf's convection steam ovens that usually means somewhere between six and eighteen months, sooner with hard water or heavy use.

- Filter icon on a hood: wash the grease filters, then reset
- Clean Filter on a dishwasher: remove, rinse under the tap, relock
- Rinse aid light: refill to the full mark
- Descale prompt: run the maker's descaling cycle with the descaler it names

## Doing the job first, then resetting the light

Almost every reminder can be cleared with a button press, and that is the trap. A reset without the work tells the appliance the filter is fresh or the tub is clean, and the next reminder is now months away while the buildup keeps growing. If you cannot do the job today, leave the light on; it is the only record the appliance keeps.

It is also worth writing the date beside the task in your service record. When a reminder starts returning faster than it used to, that pattern is information a technician can use.

## Where to stop

No reminder on any display is a request to unscrew a panel, loosen a gas fitting or cut into refrigerant tubing. If a code does not name a task, keeps returning right after the job is done, or arrives with a burning smell, heat or a tripped breaker, switch the appliance off and treat it as a repair. An exhaust warning with a hot cabinet means stopping the cycle and unplugging the dryer until the run is cleared.

## Step by step.

Four steps, in the order worth doing them.

01

### Read the words

Decide whether the display names a task (filter, clean, descale, vent) or shows a code with no task attached.

02

### Look it up if unsure

Check the manual or our error code pages before assuming a code is only a reminder.

03

### Do the named job

Change or wash the filter, run the clean or descale cycle, clear the lint path or refill the dispenser.

04

### Reset, then record

Clear the light the way the manual says and note the date in your service record.

For the heart of your home.

## Questions owners ask.

### Do appliance reminder lights mean something is broken?

No. They are timers or sensors asking for routine work. A code with no task attached, or one that returns right after the work, is the one to look up or book.

### Why did the filter light come on when the water still tastes fine?

Many filter lights run on time or volume rather than a measurement. Whirlpool's guidance is to follow the indicator or six months, whichever comes first.

### Is it safe to keep drying after an exhaust restriction warning?

Not for long. Clean the lint screen and check the outside flap now, and book an exhaust cleaning if the warning comes back on the next load.

### Can a technician reset every reminder during a visit?

Yes, after doing the work each one asks for. The visit log then records which reminders were due and when they were cleared.

## When it needs a technician.

The services on the right are where this guide ends when the checks do not settle it.

### Water filter and descaling service

Fresh filters in dispensers and ice makers, and scale cleared from steam ovens, ice makers and dish care machines.

### Lint path and exhaust vent cleaning

Lint cleared from the screen housing, the duct behind the laundry and the whole run to the outside hood.

### Grease filter and hood fan service

Hood and microwave grease filters degreased or replaced, charcoal pads renewed, and the fan and duct checked for airflow.

### Condenser coil cleaning

Dust and pet hair brushed and vacuumed off the coil and fan of every cold storage unit in the house.
