# Appliance maintenance in Westchester County.

11 cities and neighborhoods across Westchester County, part of New York Metro — 1 with a page on what that place does to a home appliance.

## What Westchester County does to a home appliance.

Where home appliances sit in Westchester County: older housing stock, built-in and paneled suites, family houses.

### Older housing stock

Plaster walls, floors that are no longer quite level and narrow doorways make an old house hard on appliances, so leveling feet are adjusted, doors are checked for an even seal, and a heavy unit is never pulled out farther than the floor can take.

### Built-in and paneled suites

European and professional-style appliances often come with their own care steps, particular descaling agents for steam ovens and particular filters for hoods and refrigerators, and upkeep follows each maker's care chapter rather than one routine for all.

### Family houses

Children, pets and sports gear load a family's appliances with hair, grass and mud, which reach refrigerator coils and washer drain filters first, and those are cleaned on each visit.

### Scarsdale

Scarsdale's suburban housing stock dates mostly to the late 19th and early 20th centuries, growing quickly after 1877 when the village became an express stop on the New York and Harlem Railroad; a 150-acre farm was subdivided into single-family lots in 1891.

### Armonk

Armonk sits almost entirely on dry land, with only about 1.5 percent of its six square miles covered by water, in a hamlet of the town of North Castle in Westchester County.

### Bronxville

Bronxville's Lawrence Park Historic District was built as a planned village by developer William Van Duzer Lawrence, whose family still owned or managed 97 percent of the village's rental market as of 1959.

### Chappaqua

The hamlet grew up around a Quaker meeting house built in 1753 that still holds services, and the surrounding Old Chappaqua Historic District was added to the National Register in 1974.

### Harrison

The town of Harrison in Westchester County includes the Purchase section, whose large corporate campuses sit alongside neighborhoods of single-family homes built across several decades of postwar suburban growth.

### Larchmont

Larchmont incorporated as a village in 1891 around its yacht club and Long Island Sound shorefront, and much of its housing stock dates to the railroad-suburb building boom that followed.

### Mamaroneck

Mamaroneck's harbor supported shipping and manufacturing through the 19th century before the town became a Westchester County commuter suburb, leaving a housing stock that spans both eras.

### New Rochelle

New Rochelle earned the nickname 'City of Homes' after developers built out planned neighborhoods such as Rochelle Park in the early 1900s, one of the first planned residential communities in the country.

### Rye

Rye was first settled by English colonists around 1660 and later grew as a Long Island Sound resort community, a history that still shows in its mix of waterfront cottages and larger inland houses.

### White Plains

White Plains counted 25,494 housing units in the 2020 census with a vacancy rate near 5 percent, a mix that has shifted toward downtown apartment towers since a wave of mixed-use development in the 2000s and 2010s.

### Yonkers

Yonkers grew as a mill town powered by the Hudson and the Nepperhan River, and neighborhoods such as Park Hill still carry the dense apartment buildings and rowhouses built for that industrial-era workforce.
