# Burning Electrical Smell From an Appliance: Breaker Off First

A burning electrical smell from an appliance is a sharp odor of hot plastic, scorched insulation or overheated dust coming from a cabinet, a plug, a motor or the outlet behind it.

## Smell gas? Leave first. Heat, water or sparks? Stop it, cut the power

Treat a burning electrical smell as urgent. With no gas in the air, switch the appliance off and its breaker off at the panel, and do not reset it again and again. Smoke or flame means leave and call 911 from outside. The appliance stays off until the source has been found.

## What it usually means.

Every appliance with a motor, a heater or a control board turns some electricity into heat, and it is built to shed that heat safely. A burning electrical smell means heat is going where it should not. Sometimes the cause is harmless and passes: a new oven or cooktop burning off its factory coating during the first uses, a spill baked onto an element, dust burning off a heater used for the first time in months. Sometimes it is upkeep: a motor running hot inside a hood clogged with grease, lint or dust settled on a hot part, a condenser fan straining against a coil packed with hair. And sometimes it is a failure: a plug or cord overheating at a loose outlet, a wire burning at a terminal, a motor or a board failing. Only the first kind should end on its own. With any smell of hot plastic or wiring, switch the appliance off and cut its power at the breaker, then see whether the smell fades. If there is smoke or flame, get everyone out and call 911 from outside. If you smell gas as well, do not touch any switch or breaker at all: leave the house and call from outside. When the smell comes from a failed part, the repair belongs to the sister repair site for that appliance.

The 6 causes, cheapest first

Answer these first

01

Is the smell hot plastic or wiring, burnt food, or scorched dust?

02

Where is it strongest: at the cabinet, at the plug and outlet, or at a fan or vent?

03

Is the appliance new, or was an element or burner used for the first time in months?

04

Is the plug or the outlet warm to the touch, discolored or loose?

05

Does the smell fade once the breaker is off, or is there smoke?

## Check these before you book.

Burning electrical smell from an appliance: 5 checks, and none of them costs anything.

01

If you smell gas as well, touch no switch or breaker; get everyone out and call from outside.

02

With no gas, switch the appliance off and turn its breaker off at the panel, then do not reset it.

03

If there is smoke or flame, leave the house and call 911 from outside.

### Also worth checking

- With the power off and no smoke, look at the plug and outlet for scorching, and feel the cord for heat without pulling it.
- Note what the appliance was doing and which part the smell came from before anyone restarts it.

## The causes, cheapest first.

6 things burning electrical smell from an appliance: breaker off first turns out to be, from first uses of a new oven or element to a motor, wire or board failing inside.

[The cost guide](https://appliancemaintenance.center/cost/)

1. 01 no service ### First uses of a new oven or element New ovens and elements burn off a protective coating during their first hours of use, and the maker usually asks for an empty burn-in run with the windows open. The smell should fade within a few uses. No service: check it yourself
2. 02 no service ### Food or grease baked onto a hot surface A spill on an element, in the bottom of the oven or on a burner smells sharp and can smoke. With the appliance off and cold, the spill is cleaned off following the care chapter of the manual. No service: check it yourself
3. 03 low ### Grease loading the hood fan motor Filters left to clog let grease reach the blower and its motor, which then runs hot and smells. Filters are cleaned or replaced and the reachable fan housing wiped; a motor already damaged is a repair. [Fixed by grease filter and hood fan service](https://appliancemaintenance.center/services/grease-filter-and-hood-fan-service/) [On a cooking appliance](https://appliancemaintenance.center/types/cooking-appliance-maintenance/)
4. 04 low ### Dust or lint scorching on a hot part Pet hair and dust on a condenser fan or coil, or lint near a laundry heater, smells of scorched dust when it heats. The coil or the lint path is cleaned with the power off. [Fixed by condenser coil cleaning](https://appliancemaintenance.center/services/condenser-coil-cleaning/) [On a cold storage unit](https://appliancemaintenance.center/types/cold-storage-maintenance/)
5. 05 moderate ### Plug, cord or outlet overheating A worn outlet, a loose plug or an extension cord under a heavy load heats up at the contact. The visit finds and notes it; the outlet is an electrician's job, and the appliance stays off that circuit until then. [Book a diagnostic visit](https://appliancemaintenance.center/services/diagnostic-visit/)
6. 06 moderate to highest ### A motor, wire or board failing inside A motor with a burnt winding, a wire scorched at a terminal or a board with a burnt component gives off a sharp, lasting smell. The appliance stays off, and the repair goes to the sister repair site for that appliance. [Book a diagnostic visit](https://appliancemaintenance.center/services/diagnostic-visit/)

## What else it could be.

Most often confused with appliance tripping the breaker every time it runs, then hot or burning lint smell in the laundry room: stop the cycle.

## Questions about burning electrical smell from an appliance: breaker off first.

### The new oven smells hot on its first bake. Is that normal?

Usually, yes. Most makers ask for an empty run at a high setting with the windows open to burn off the coating, and the smell fades within a few uses. A sharp smell that stays or gets worse is not the coating.

### Can the appliance be moved to another outlet to see if that fixes it?

Not while the smell is unexplained. If the plug or outlet has overheated, both need to be looked at; moving a failing appliance to a new circuit only moves the hazard.

### Why does the smell come back every time the hood fan runs?

The usual reason is grease that got past clogged filters and coats the blower and motor. Cleaning the filters and the housing often ends it; if the motor itself smells hot, it has started to fail.

### Is a warm plug on a cold storage unit normal?

Slightly warm can be, since the unit draws current all day. Hot to the touch, discolored or loose in the outlet is not, and the circuit should be switched off and checked.
