# Appliance Tripping the Breaker Every Time It Runs

An appliance tripping the breaker cuts its own power, or a whole kitchen or laundry circuit, the moment it starts, heats or spins, and the breaker or GFCI outlet trips again after a reset.

## Smell gas? Leave first. Heat, water or sparks? Stop it, cut the power

A breaker that trips each time an appliance runs is a warning, not a nuisance. Switch the breaker off and leave it off; do not reset it repeatedly. If there is a burning smell or smoke, get out and call 911 from outside, and keep the appliance unplugged until it has been checked.

## What it usually means.

A breaker trips to protect wiring from too much current, and a GFCI outlet or breaker trips when current leaks to ground, often through water. When the same appliance trips it again and again, one of three things is happening: the circuit is overloaded with too many things running together, moisture has reached an outlet or a part inside, or a heater, motor or compressor inside the appliance is drawing more than it should or leaking current. Resetting it repeatedly forces the wiring to carry that excess current each time, and it can turn a small problem into a burnt terminal. The rule is simple: after one reset that trips again, switch the breaker off and leave it off. Some causes are easy to settle: a microwave and a kettle on one kitchen circuit, a garage freezer on an old GFCI that is sensitive to damp. Others are upkeep that eases a strained part, such as a condenser coil packed with dust that makes the compressor start hard. Many, though, are a failed element, a pump with water in it or a motor with a shorted winding. Those are repairs, and the sister repair site for that appliance takes them on.

The 5 causes, cheapest first

Answer these first

01

Which appliance is it, and does it trip at the start, while heating or on the spin?

02

Is it a breaker in the panel or a GFCI outlet with a test and reset button?

03

Were other appliances running on the same circuit at the moment it tripped?

04

Has there been a leak, a spill or a damp spell near the appliance or its outlet?

05

Does it trip even with nothing else on the circuit, straight after a reset?

## Check these before you book.

Appliance tripping the breaker: 5 checks, and none of them costs anything.

01

Switch the breaker off and leave it off after a second trip; do not reset it again and again.

02

If there is a burning smell or smoke, leave the power off, get out and call 911 from outside.

03

Note what the appliance was doing when it tripped and what else was running on the circuit.

### Also worth checking

- Look for water on the floor, under the appliance or at its outlet, and keep clear of any wet outlet.
- Leave the appliance unplugged and its breaker off until it has been checked.

## The causes, cheapest first.

5 things appliance tripping the breaker every time it runs turns out to be, from two heavy loads sharing one circuit to an element, motor or compressor failing.

[The cost guide](https://appliancemaintenance.center/cost/)

1. 01 no service ### Two heavy loads sharing one circuit A microwave, a kettle and a toaster on one kitchen circuit, or a space heater near the laundry, can add up to more than it carries. Move the other loads and see whether the trips stop. No service: check it yourself
2. 02 low ### Compressor straining against a dirty coil A cold storage unit with a coil packed with dust runs hot and can start hard, which may trip a weak or shared circuit. The coil is cleaned with the power off, and the unit's start is watched afterward. [Fixed by condenser coil cleaning](https://appliancemaintenance.center/services/condenser-coil-cleaning/) [On a cold storage unit](https://appliancemaintenance.center/types/cold-storage-maintenance/)
3. 03 low ### Damp at a GFCI outlet Outlets in garages, basements and laundry rooms pick up moisture, and a GFCI trips at the first leak to ground. The visit finds the damp outlet and notes it; outlet work is an electrician's. [Book a diagnostic visit](https://appliancemaintenance.center/services/diagnostic-visit/)
4. 04 moderate ### Water reaching a heater or pump A slow leak inside a dish care machine or a washer can wet a heater terminal or the pump. The leak source and the wet part are found on a visit; a damaged part is a repair. [Book a diagnostic visit](https://appliancemaintenance.center/services/diagnostic-visit/) [On a dish care machine](https://appliancemaintenance.center/types/dish-care-maintenance/)
5. 05 moderate to highest ### An element, motor or compressor failing A heating element with a cracked sheath, a motor with a shorted winding or a compressor that has failed trips the breaker every time. The appliance stays off, and the repair goes to the sister repair site. [Book a diagnostic visit](https://appliancemaintenance.center/services/diagnostic-visit/)

## What else it could be.

Most often confused with burning electrical smell from an appliance: breaker off first, then supply hose leaking or bulging behind an appliance: shut the water off.

## Questions about appliance tripping the breaker every time it runs.

### Is it safe to reset the breaker once to see if it holds?

Once, with nothing else on the circuit and no smell or smoke, is reasonable. If it trips again, leave it off. Each reset sends the same excess current through the wiring again.

### Why does only the GFCI outlet in the garage keep tripping?

GFCI outlets react to tiny leaks to ground, and garages are damp. An older outlet, condensation or a worn cord can all trip it. The appliance and the outlet are both checked, and outlet work is an electrician's.

### Can a freezer be plugged into an extension cord while the breaker is sorted out?

Most makers advise against extension cords for cold storage units because of heat at the connections. Move the food to another unit or a cooler with ice until the circuit is safe.

### Does upkeep prevent breakers from tripping?

It removes some causes, such as a compressor straining against a dirty coil, and it finds wet parts and worn cords before they trip anything. A part that has already failed still needs a repair.
