Leave first. Heat, water or sparks? Stop it, cut the power A gas smell is an emergency. Burners off if they are in reach, no flame and no switches, windows and doors open, everyone out, and a call to the gas utility or 911 from outside. The appliance is not relit until its connector, shutoff and burners have been checked. ## What it usually means. Natural gas and propane have no smell of their own; utilities add an odorant so a leak announces itself. In a kitchen, the gas travels from a shutoff valve at the wall, through a flexible connector, into a regulator and a manifold behind the knobs, and out through each burner, where it meets a spark or a hot surface igniter. A smell can come from any point on that path, and some sources are small: a knob nudged slightly on while wiping the panel, a burner blown out by a pot that boiled over, or an oven burner that lights a second late and puffs a little unburned gas each time. Others are larger: a connector kinked or loosened when the appliance was pulled out to clean behind it, a valve stem that has started to seep. The response does not depend on which it is. Turn the burners off if the knobs are right in front of you, strike no flame and touch no switch, open windows and doors on the way out, get everyone outside, and call the gas utility or 911 from outside the house. Once the utility or a technician has made it safe, the upkeep side begins: every joint leak-tested, burners cleaned and every flame checked. No. Any switch can make a spark, and that includes the fan. Leave every switch as it is, open doors and windows on your way out, and call from outside. ### The smell only lasts a second when the oven lights. Is that urgent? A brief whiff at ignition often means the igniter is slow, letting a little gas gather before it catches. It is not safe to ignore: stop using the oven and book a check. If the smell stays, treat it as a leak and leave. ### Does a propane kitchen smell different from one on natural gas? Both carry an added odorant and smell much alike. Propane is heavier than air and settles low, so the smell may be strongest near the floor or in a basement, which is one more reason to leave rather than search for it. ### Who relights the burners after the gas company has been out? Once the utility has made the supply safe, a technician checks each connector and valve, relights the burners and reads every flame.
