A dishwasher cleans by spraying the same small amount of water over and over, and it relies on a filter to keep that water clean. When the filter at the bottom of the tub is packed, the pump sprays food particles back onto the dishes, and grit lands mostly on the upper rack and inside glasses. When a nozzle on a spray arm is blocked with a seed, a flake of scale or a bit of label, one strip of the rack is left dirty every time. Hard water adds a white film and spots that no amount of scrubbing removes, and an empty rinse aid dispenser makes spots worse. Loading matters too: a tall pan in the wrong place blocks an arm from turning, and plates facing away from the spray stay dirty. The detergent dose and the water that arrives first, often cold if the kitchen is far from the water heater, change results as well. Scrape them, but most makers advise against a full rinse. Modern detergents work on food, and sensors in some machines use the dirt level to set the cycle.
