A gas cooking appliance runs on a simple chain: a shutoff valve at the wall, a flexible connector to the appliance, a regulator, the valves behind each knob, and the burners where gas meets air and a spark. Upkeep on that chain is mostly about keeping the burner end clean and confirming the supply end is tight. Spills that bake into the burner ports turn the flame yellow and uneven; a cap sitting slightly crooked does the same; grease on an igniter's tip makes it click without lighting; a connector pinched behind the appliance or corroded at a nut can seep. This check covers all of it, with the gas on only where testing needs it. The grates and caps come off and the heads are cleaned, with the ports cleared by a straight pin or a wire made for the job rather than a toothpick that can snap off inside. Igniters are wiped dry, each burner is lit and its flame read at low and high, and the oven or broiler burner is watched the same way.
