Start with what you own

# Appliance types, told apart.

Four groups of household appliances, four kinds of slow wear. Cold storage loses efficiency to dust on its coils and tired door gaskets; cooking appliances collect grease in hood filters and food in burner ports; dish care clogs its filter and spray arms with food and scale; and laundry packs lint into the exhaust run and grows film in the drum seal and drain filter. Naming the groups in the booking tells the technician which brushes, filters and gaskets to bring.

## Four types, each its own job.

Each one is built, reached and serviced differently. Open yours for what fails on it and what the work involves.

### Cold storage

Upkeep for everything in the house that keeps things cold: refrigerators, freezers, wine and beverage units and ice makers, cleaned and checked before they start struggling.

### Cooking appliances

Upkeep for ovens, ranges, cooktops, hoods, microwaves, steam and speed ovens: burners and igniters cleaned, gas joints checked, grease filters and descaling done on time.

### Dish care

Upkeep for dishwashers and disposers: filters rinsed, spray arms cleared, the door seal and drain loop checked, and hard-water scale kept off the parts that heat and spray.

### Laundry

Upkeep for washers, dryers and the exhaust run behind them: lint paths cleared, drain filters and door boots cleaned, supply hoses inspected before they give way.

Not sure which you have?

### Start from what it is doing

If the home appliance in your home does not obviously match one of these, work from the symptom instead. It reaches the same answer from the other end.

## Which one is yours?

One look at the home appliance usually settles it. The first sign of each type is on the right; its page has the rest, and what that type means for a service.

### Cold storage unit Cold storage

It belongs to this group if its job is to keep something cold or frozen behind a sealed door or drawer: food, drinks, wine or ice.

### Cooking appliance Cooking appliances

It belongs to this group if it heats food by flame, element, induction, microwave energy or steam, or pulls cooking air away through a filter above the surface.

### Dish care machine Dish care

It belongs to this group if it washes dishes or grinds the food scraps that come off them on their way to the drain.

### Laundry machine Laundry

It belongs to this group if it washes or dries clothing, towels or bedding, stacked or side by side, vented outdoors or ventless.

## What a service usually costs.

Compare the price of upkeep with the price of the trouble it heads off, not with nothing. A coil cleaning costs a fraction of a compressor, a lint path cleaning a fraction of a heater or thermostat, a set of braided hoses a fraction of a new floor and a few days of fans running in the laundry room. Upkeep also lowers the power and gas bills a little every month, and it is what lets a well-built appliance reach the full service life its maker designed for. The math changes only where an appliance is already near the end: very old, on its third or fourth repair, or built in a way that no longer has parts. There a visit can still clean and log it, and the log tells you honestly when to stop spending on it. The same visit is also the cheapest time to find the small problem that would otherwise arrive as a breakdown.

[Whole-home maintenance visit](https://appliancemaintenance.center/services/diagnostic-visit/): Upkeep is quoted after the appliances have been seen.

| Service | Relative cost | Notes |
| --- | --- | --- |
| [Condenser coil and fan cleaned on a refrigerator, freezer, wine or beverage unit or ice maker, drain pan checked](https://appliancemaintenance.center/services/condenser-coil-cleaning/) | lowest | A single freestanding unit with a coil under the kick plate is the smallest job here. A built-in with a top coil, a column pair or several units in one trip take longer, and a coil packed solid in a garage takes longest. |
| [Water filters replaced and flushed, inlet screens checked, descaling run on a steam oven, ice maker or dish care machine](https://appliancemaintenance.center/services/water-filter-and-descaling-service/) | low | One filter swap is modest, and the cartridge itself is the main part of it. Descaling a steam oven or an ice maker with the maker's product adds time, and several water appliances on hard water make the fuller visit. |
| [Door seals tested, cleaned and reseated, hinges and cabinet level adjusted, a worn gasket replaced](https://appliancemaintenance.center/services/door-seal-check-and-replacement/) | low to moderate | A seal that only needs cleaning and a hinge or leveling adjustment is the light end. A new gasket on one door is a step up, and seals on a column pair, an oven door or a front-loader's boot are the fuller job. |
| [Lint path cleaned from the screen housing through the transition duct and wall run to the outside hood](https://appliancemaintenance.center/services/lint-path-and-exhaust-vent-cleaning/) | low to moderate | A short, straight run through one wall is the lighter end. A long run with bends, a roof or soffit exit, a stacked pair or a closet installation takes longer, and a crushed transition replaced with metal duct adds a part. |
| [Drain filter cleared, door boot and detergent drawer cleaned, tub clean run, fill hoses checked and machine leveled](https://appliancemaintenance.center/services/drum-seal-and-drain-filter-cleaning/) | low | A front-loader with a reachable filter and a light film is modest. Heavy mildew in the boot, a stacked pair that has to be separated or new braided hoses fitted on the same visit sits higher. |
| [Filter and sump cleaned, spray arm nozzles cleared, door seals and dispensers checked, drain loop confirmed](https://appliancemaintenance.center/services/dish-care-filter-and-spray-arm-cleaning/) | lowest | A filter clean and nozzle clearing is the smallest item on this page. Adding the disposer splash guard, a drain hose rerouted into a proper high loop or a replacement filter makes it a little longer. |
| [Burner heads, ports and caps cleaned, igniters cleared, flames read, gas connector and shutoff leak-tested](https://appliancemaintenance.center/services/burner-igniter-and-gas-connection-check/) | low to moderate | A four-burner cooktop with light spills is the light end. A pro-style layout with six or eight burners, a griddle and two ovens takes longer, and an old connector swapped for a new one adds a part. |
| [Hood or microwave grease filters degreased or replaced, charcoal pads renewed, fan housing wiped, damper checked](https://appliancemaintenance.center/services/grease-filter-and-hood-fan-service/) | low | Degreasing the metal filters of one hood is modest. New filters, fresh charcoal pads on a recirculating model or a heavily coated blower housing make the fuller visit. |
| [Annual plan: scheduled visits across cold storage, cooking, dish care and laundry, with one running service log](https://appliancemaintenance.center/services/annual-maintenance-plan/) | lowest | Each planned visit costs no more than the separate jobs it covers, and usually less, because the technician already knows the house and its log. Parts found worn along the way are quoted before anything is fitted. |

For the heart of your home.

## Questions about the types.

### Why are the appliances grouped instead of listed one by one?

Because upkeep follows what an appliance does, not its name. Everything that keeps things cold wears through its coil, its gasket and its water path; everything that cooks, through grease and burner ports; dish care through food and scale; laundry through lint and damp. One group, one set of tools and parts.

### Does the garage freezer need the same care as the kitchen one?

Mostly, and sometimes more. A freezer in a garage breathes dustier air and sits through wider temperature swings, so its coil fills faster and its gasket hardens sooner. It belongs on the list even when it hardly gets opened.

### Which group needs attention most often?

Laundry, in most homes. The dryer's exhaust run collects lint with every load, and a front-load washer's door seal and drain filter hold water and residue between washes. Cold storage coils come next, especially with pets in the house.

### What details about each appliance speed up the visit?

Its group, the maker and model printed on its plate, its rough age, its fuel, built-in or freestanding, and the last time it was cleaned. With those, the van carries parts for your house and the visit is booked for the right length.
