Cold storage is the group that never gets a day off. A refrigerator, a garage or basement freezer, a column pair, an undercounter wine or beverage unit and a built-in or freestanding ice maker all do the same job in the same way: a compressor pushes heat out through a condenser coil, and a door seal keeps the warm kitchen from walking back in. That is why their upkeep looks so alike from one make to the next. The condenser sits under a toe grille, behind a louvered panel on top of a built-in or across the back of a freestanding model, and it collects lint, pet hair and kitchen dust every week it runs. Door gaskets flatten at the hinge side and harden where a hand grabs the handle. Water filters in a dispenser or an ice maker lose their charcoal long before the indicator light admits it, and the ice maker itself grows a white crust on its mold or plate wherever the water is hard. A visit for this group is short and physical: the coil vacuumed and brushed, the fan blades and the drain pan checked, each gasket tested along its whole length, the cabinet leveled so the doors swing shut on their own, the filter changed and the temperatures written down for next time. None of it replaces a part that has already failed; it keeps a healthy unit from getting there. What fails on a cold storage unit How to tell 01 It belongs to this group if its job is to keep something cold or frozen behind a sealed door or drawer: food, drinks, wine or ice. 02 Somewhere on it there is a condenser you can find: under a kick plate at floor level, behind a grille on top of a built-in, or on the back of the cabinet. 03 It hums and rests in cycles, the air inside is colder than the room, and a magnetic or rubber gasket runs around every door or drawer front. 04 If it has a water line, it also has a filter or an inlet screen somewhere, and that part is on the upkeep list too. On a cold storage unit: a dust mat across the condenser, gaskets that stop sealing flat, water filters and ice maker scale, doors that drift and drains that clog. The problems it shows ### A dust mat across the condenser The fan under a cold storage unit drags room air through the coil all day. Within a year or two the fins wear a gray felt of lint and hair, heat stops leaving, and the compressor runs longer to hold the same number on the thermometer. ### Gaskets that stop sealing flat Door seals lose their spring where they fold at the hinge and pick up grime where the door is grabbed. A seal that no longer pulls tight lets humid air in, which turns into frost on the back wall and into longer run times. ### Water filters and ice maker scale A dispenser or ice maker filter keeps working after its charcoal is spent, so the first sign is taste, not a light. Hard water then leaves a chalky layer on the ice mold, the plate or the fill cup and slows every harvest. ### Doors that drift and drains that clog A cabinet that has settled forward lets a door hang open by a finger's width. The defrost water trough and its drain tube, meanwhile, collect crumbs and slime until melt water backs up under the crisper or freezes on the floor of the freezer. ## Getting at it, and whether to. Give the technician room at the front of the unit: the toe grille or the top grille comes off, and on a freestanding model the cabinet may be rolled out on its wheels. Clear the floor in front of any unit that has to be pulled out, and mention wood or tile that marks easily so a sliding pad goes down first. 2. Tell us where the water shutoff for the dispenser or ice maker is, and when the filter was last changed, if you know. 3. Have the model number from the label inside the fresh food section or on the ceiling of the freezer, so the right filter and gasket can come along. Most makers ask for it once or twice a year, and a home with shedding pets or a unit in a dusty garage needs the shorter end. The care chapter of the owner's manual gives the interval for your model, and some built-ins print it on a sticker behind the top grille. ### Is a filter change enough, or does the ice maker need more than that? A filter keeps new water clean, but it does nothing for scale that has already formed. On hard water the mold, the plate or the fill cup is cleaned or descaled with the product the maker names, and the first batches of ice after it are thrown away. ### Why do the doors of a column or French door unit need leveling? Most cold storage cabinets are set with the front slightly higher than the back, so the doors swing closed on their own weight.
