Appliance maintenance in Marina.

Marina apartments on filled ground beside the bay sit in salt fog much of the year, which pits hinge pins and condenser fins on refrigerators and wine units, so coils there are brushed and hinges wiped and lubricated where the maker allows it.

What Marina does
to a home appliance.

The Marina District sits on the former fairgrounds of the 1915 Panama-Pacific International Exposition, and most of its residential buildings were constructed in the 1920s once the fair's structures were cleared.

Much of the neighborhood is built on fill placed after the 1906 earthquake, using earthquake rubble along with sand and mud dredged from the bay, rather than on natural ground.

That fill proved vulnerable to soil liquefaction in the 1989 Loma Prieta earthquake, which caused serious damage and a fire in parts of the neighborhood.

The Palace of Fine Arts is the only exposition-era building still standing on its original site, surrounded today by the 1920s residential blocks that replaced the rest of the fairground.

Apartments and small homes

In a small kitchen the refrigerator often stands with its back to a wall and its sides boxed in by cabinets, and a maintenance visit there measures the air gap the maker calls for and clears whatever has crept into it before cleaning the coil.

On the water

Salt carried on sea breezes lands on everything with a fan, and the fins of condenser coils, the hinges of refrigerator doors and the outside flap of a dryer exhaust pit faster near the water, so upkeep there adds a corrosion check to every cleaning.

Tower living

Tower apartments run their appliances in rooms that never open to the weather, so the air conditioning does what the windows cannot, and a refrigerator or wine unit breathing that cooled but dusty air still needs its condenser coil brushed once or twice a year.
