What the water filter and descaling service
involves.
Water runs through more appliances than most homeowners count: the dispenser and ice maker in the refrigerator door, a standalone ice maker under the counter, a plumbed coffee system, a steam or combination steam oven, the dishwasher and its rinse aid path. Each one handles water in two ways that need upkeep. A filter, where there is one, is a cartridge of carbon that stops working quietly once it is spent, so taste and odor come back well before any light turns red. And wherever water is heated or frozen, the minerals in it are left behind as white or tan scale that narrows passages, coats heaters and slows ice harvests. This service handles both. Filters are replaced with the cartridge that fits the model, the system is flushed until the air and carbon dust are out, and the indicator is reset. Descaling follows the maker's own routine for each appliance and the product it names, whether that is a steam oven's program, an ice maker's clean cycle or a dishwasher treatment. The inlet screens on each water valve are checked for grit, and the supply valve behind the appliance is turned to make sure it still shuts off.
How the visit goesWhat it usually costsLow · Water filters replaced and flushed, inlet screens checked, descaling run on a steam oven, ice maker or dish care machine
One filter swap is modest, and the cartridge itself is the main part of it. Descaling a steam oven or an ice maker with the maker's product adds time, and several water appliances on hard water make the fuller visit.

The home, the climate and the building all change how the water filter and descaling service goes. These notes are about that, metro by metro.
All service areasTampa BayFL · 31 areas
Tampa Bay's regional supply mixes groundwater, river water and desalinated Gulf water, and its taste can drift as that mix changes, so water filter and descaling service there keeps the refrigerator cartridge on schedule and checks ice-maker molds and steam-oven reservoirs for crust.
OrlandoFL · 30 areas
Orlando pumps its supply from deep limestone wells, and the dissolved minerals that ride along still build up in ice makers, steam ovens and coffee systems, so water filter and descaling service there pairs a fresh cartridge with a look at every inlet screen in the house.
Miami / South FloridaFL · 47 areas
South Florida tap water begins in the limestone of the Biscayne Aquifer, and the chalky film it leaves on ice-maker molds and steam-oven reservoirs is what water filter and descaling service clears away, along with a fresh cartridge for the dispenser.
New York MetroNY · 75 areas
Scale builds slowly on New York City's mountain-fed tap water, and water filter and descaling service in an apartment there leans instead on changing cartridges on time and cleaning an ice bin that sits idle between gatherings.
HoustonTX · 36 areas
Houston treats its drinking water with chloramine, which some households taste at the dispenser, so water filter and descaling service there fits a cartridge rated for the home's supply and clears mineral buildup from inlet valves and steam reservoirs.
ChicagoIL · 50 areas
Homes on Lake Michigan water see moderate mineral buildup, while houses on private wells in outer Chicagoland can see far more, so water filter and descaling service there begins by asking where the water comes from before setting a descaling interval.
Los AngelesCA · 95 areas
Much of Los Angeles drinks water carried in from distant rivers, and it leaves white crust on ice-maker molds, dispenser tubes and steam generators, so water filter and descaling service there usually runs on a shorter interval than a manual written for average water.
San DiegoCA · 31 areas
San Diego depends on water brought in from far away, much of it mineral-heavy, and water filter and descaling service there pays special attention to built-in coffee systems, steam ovens and ice makers, where scale first slows the flow and then stops it.
San Francisco Bay AreaCA · 74 areas
Sierra snowmelt reaches San Francisco taps with little mineral in it, while some South Bay homes get noticeably harder well water, so water filter and descaling service around the Bay sets its interval by the home's own supply rather than one calendar for the region.
