What Noe Valley does

Noe Valley grew mainly as a working-class neighborhood of row houses, with some blocks holding as many as a dozen attached houses in a row, a density unusual even for San Francisco.

Most of the neighborhood's housing dates to the late 19th and early 20th centuries, with a second wave of construction after the 1906 earthquake pushed development further from downtown.

The area was known as Horner's Addition after an 1854 land sale before it took its current name from Californio statesman Jose de Jesus Noe.
