Error codes

Appliance
error codes,
read properly.

A code narrows the search and is also the thing most often read wrong: the same characters mean different things on different brands, and a fair number of the codes people look up are not failures at all — they are modes the appliance was left in.

Three things before
you look it up.

A code is a lead, not a verdict. These decide whether the answer you find will be any use.

01

Write the reminder down

The code, the words on the display or the light that is blinking, exactly as shown. Take a photo first, because unplugging the appliance can clear it.

02

Find the model on the plate

Inside the door, on the tub edge, behind the kick plate or on the back panel. A clean-filter prompt on one maker's machine is a drain warning on another's.

03

Is it a reminder or a hazard?

Heat or a scorched smell from the laundry, gas in the air, a hose that leaks, a burning smell or a tripping breaker: act on that first. A light that asks for a clean filter or a descale can wait for a booked visit.

What each kind
of code means.

Codes fall into a handful of families. The family says more about the likely service than the characters do — and one of them is not a service at all.

How to read a code

Reminders, not failures

29 codes

Nothing has broken; the appliance has been counting hours, cycles or gallons and is asking for its routine care. A refrigerator lights a filter icon after about six months of water, a front-load washer suggests a tub-clean cycle after a set number of loads, a steam oven or a dishwasher asks for descaling or rinse aid, and some dryers remind you to check the exhaust. Do the task the reminder names, reset it the way the manual describes, and write the date in the service record.

Filters

44 codes

A filter has reached the end of its life or is clogged enough for the appliance to notice: a refrigerator water cartridge past its gallons or months, a hood's grease or charcoal filter loaded with residue, a dish-care filter packed with food, a washer inlet filter choked with grit. The fix is a clean or a new filter of the right part number, fitted with the appliance unplugged and the water closed where there is one, then the reminder reset.

Vents and airflow

9 codes

Air is not moving the way the appliance expects. On a dryer that usually means lint in the screen housing, a crushed transition duct or an exhaust run packed along its length, and some makers measure it and show a code for a restricted vent before drying slows badly. On cold storage it can mean a condenser coil buried in dust or a grille blocked by a rug. Clean the screen, check the duct behind the machine with it unplugged, and book the full run cleaned; a hot or scorched smell means stop now.

Water, fill and drain

10 codes

Water is arriving too slowly or leaving too slowly, and the cause is usually something that collects over time: a washer drain filter holding lint, coins and hair, a dishwasher sump filter full of food, inlet screens clogged with grit from the supply, or too much detergent leaving suds the machine cannot rinse. Clear the filter over a tray with the machine unplugged, check that the supply valves are fully open, run a cleaning cycle, and book a visit if the hose itself leaks or bulges.

Scale and descaling

16 codes

Minerals from the water supply have built up where the appliance heats or freezes water: a steam oven's generator, a built-in coffee system, a dishwasher's heating path, an ice maker's mold and valve. The appliance asks for a descale because scale slows heating and blocks small passages. Run the descaling program with the descaler the maker names, check the water-hardness setting against your local water, and put the next descale on the calendar.

Temperature

6 codes

The appliance has seen a temperature outside its range and is saying so, and on a maintenance visit the cause is usually outside the sealed system: a door left ajar or a gasket that no longer seals, a condenser coil furred with dust and pet hair, a grille blocked, or a unit squeezed into an alcove with no air around it. Close the door, check the gasket, give the coil air and time, and book coil cleaning; if it will not cool at all, that is a repair.

Sensors

2 codes

A sensor is giving a reading the control does not trust, and on the upkeep side that is often dirt rather than damage: dryer moisture strips coated with fabric-softener film, a refrigerator sensor iced over, a turbidity sensor in a dishwasher filmed with residue. Cleaning the strips with the appliance unplugged, defrosting and drying, or running a cleaning cycle often clears it; a code that returns after that points to a part, and that is a repair.

Questions about
the codes.

The reminder on my appliance is not listed. What now?
We publish a reminder only once the maker's own manual has confirmed what it means. For anything missing, copy the characters into your booking and the technician will look them up in the manual that matches your model.
Is a clean-filter light the same as a failure code?
No. Many appliances count hours, cycles or water use and then ask for a clean filter, a tub-clean cycle, a descale or rinse aid. Nothing has broken; the reminder clears once the task is done and the light is reset as the manual describes.
Can I clear a maintenance reminder myself?
Usually. Unplug the appliance, clean or replace the filter or screen, run the cleaning cycle the manual names, then reset the reminder. If it comes back within days, or the appliance also runs hot, leaks or smells burnt, stop and book.
The same code shows on two appliances. Is it the same thing?
Not by default. Every maker keeps a separate list, so one pair of characters might flag a choked vent on a dryer from one company and a blocked drain screen on another company's washer. The model on that appliance's own plate is what decides the reading.
