Smell gas? Leave first. Heat, water or sparks? Stop it, cut the power
Treat a burning lint smell as a fire warning. Stop the cycle, unplug the machine or switch its breaker off, and keep the door shut on a hot load; if there is smoke, leave and call 911 from outside. Do not restart it until the exhaust has been cleared from the screen housing to the outdoor hood.
What it
usually means.
Lint is fine, dry and light, and it burns easily. A vented laundry machine pushes hot, damp air through a screen, a blower, a duct behind the cabinet and a run through the wall or roof to a hood outside. When that path narrows, the heat that should leave the house stays inside the machine and the duct. The thermostats cycle the heater or burner off and on, the drum and the top panel warm up, the laundry room gets muggy, and lint that has settled near the heat begins to scorch. That is the smell: not burning cloth, but dust on a hot surface. It is a warning that the exhaust is blocked somewhere and that the next stage may be flame. Fire safety agencies name the failure to clean the exhaust as a leading cause of laundry fires in homes. The order is always the same: stop the cycle, unplug the machine or switch off its breaker, leave the door closed on a hot load if smoke is visible, and do not run it again until the whole path, from the screen housing to the outdoor hood, has been cleared. If it has already failed, with a heater, a thermostat or a burner part damaged by the heat, the sister dryer repair site takes it from there.
The 6 causes, cheapest first
Answer these first
Is the smell dusty and scorched, or is it plastic, rubber or electrical?
Is the top of the cabinet or the door glass too hot to leave a hand on for a few seconds?
When did loads last dry in one cycle, and when was the lint screen last cleared?
Outside the house, does the hood flap open and push warm air while the machine runs?
Is the duct behind the machine foil or plastic, and is it crushed against the wall?

Burning lint smell: 5 checks, and none of them costs anything.
Stop the cycle now, unplug the machine or switch off its breaker, and do not start it again today.
If smoke is visible, keep the door closed, get everyone out and call 911 from outside.
With no smoke, let the machine cool with the door shut, then clear the lint screen and look at it.
Also worth checking
- Look behind the machine for a crushed or disconnected duct, without pulling a gas machine away from its connector.
- Go outside while nothing is running and see whether the hood flap is free or packed with lint.

6 things hot or burning lint smell in the laundry room: stop the cycle turns out to be, from lint screen left full for several loads to a heat control damaged by running hot.
The cost guide-
01 no service
Lint screen left full for several loads
A screen that is not cleared before every load cuts airflow at the very first step. Clear it with the machine off and cool, and wash it with warm soapy water now and then if dryer sheets have left a film that blocks the mesh.
-
02 low
Transition duct crushed behind the machine
Pushing the machine back against the wall folds a thin foil or plastic duct flat. It is replaced with semi-rigid or rigid metal, kept short, and the machine is set back without kinking it.
-
03 low to moderate
Outdoor hood jammed with lint or a nest
The flap on the outside hood can stick shut with packed lint, and birds and rodents like the warm opening. The hood is cleared, its flap freed, and any guard that traps lint is swapped for one that does not.
-
04 low to moderate
Years of lint along the wall or roof run
Long runs, bends and roof exits collect the most. The run is cleaned end to end with a rotary brush and vacuum, and airflow at the hood is checked with the machine running.
-
05 moderate
Lint gathered inside the cabinet near the heat
Fluff that escapes past the screen or a loose duct joint settles around the heater housing or the burner inside. The machine is unplugged, and a gas model has its valve closed, before the panels come off and the cabinet is vacuumed.
-
06 moderate
A heat control damaged by running hot
Months of blocked airflow can wear out a cycling thermostat, a high-limit or a thermal fuse. The visit finds it; replacing it is a repair for the sister dryer repair site, done after the exhaust has been cleared.
