A home laundry room with a front-loading vented machine pulled out from the wall, a technician seen only from behind and shoulders down on one knee holding a length of silver flexible duct, a thick gray mat of lint pulled from it lying in a clear bag on the floor, a round metal exhaust collar in the painted wall behind, soft daylight.

What the lint path and exhaust vent cleaning
involves.

The lint screen in a dryer catches most of the fluff, and the rest goes where you cannot see it. It collects in the screen housing below the slot, in the blower wheel, in the short transition duct behind the machine, along the wall or ceiling run and in the hood outside, where a flap or a guard can hold a mat of it. Every layer means less air moving, so the drum stays damp longer, the heater or burner runs longer, and the cabinet and the exhaust run get hotter. Lint is also what burns. This service cleans the whole path, not just the screen. The dryer is unplugged, and a gas model has its supply valve closed before it is pulled out. The screen housing is vacuumed with a long, flat tool, the transition duct is taken off and cleared or replaced, and the wall run is cleaned with a rotary brush from the inside and from the hood. The flap or guard outside is cleared and checked for free movement. A crushed foil or plastic transition is replaced with semi-rigid or rigid metal, and joints are sealed with foil tape rather than screws that catch lint. The machine is then run to check airflow at the hood and the log notes the run length and condition.

How the visit goes

Lint path and exhaust vent cleaning,
step by step.

Run a cycle to confirm strong airflow at the hood, and log the run length, the duct type and the date of the next cleaning.

01

Unplug the dryer, close the gas valve on a gas model, and pull the machine out enough to reach the transition duct.

02

Vacuum the lint screen housing and the area around the blower that the owner's panels allow, and clear the transition duct.

03

Brush and vacuum the wall run from inside and from the outdoor hood, and free the hood flap or guard.

04

Replace crushed foil or plastic transition duct with metal, reconnect it with foil tape, and push the dryer back without kinking it.

05

Run a cycle to confirm strong airflow at the hood, and log the run length, the duct type and the date of the next cleaning.

All problems
A quiet home laundry room with a front-loading vented machine standing still, its door closed and its display dark, a faint thin haze of pale smoke hanging near the round metal exhaust collar on the wall behind it, a crushed silver foil duct visible at the back, the power cord unplugged and lying on the floor, seen from the doorway. All service areas

Tampa BayFL · 31 areas

Tampa Bay laundries often sit in a garage or along an outside wall, and lint path and exhaust vent cleaning there clears the screen housing, the full duct and the wall outlet, where wasps, lizards and damp lint like to settle through the humid months.

OrlandoFL · 30 areas

Orlando houses of recent decades often route the dryer exhaust overhead and out a roof jack, a long hidden path where lint collects unseen, so lint path and exhaust vent cleaning there covers the whole run and confirms the cap's flap still opens freely.

Miami / South FloridaFL · 47 areas

In South Florida condos the dryer exhaust often joins a building riser or runs a long interior duct, so lint path and exhaust vent cleaning there is arranged with the association while the unit's own screen housing and connector are cleared.

New York MetroNY · 75 areas

Many New York apartments run a condensing or heat-pump dryer where no outside wall can be reached, and lint path and exhaust vent cleaning there turns to the condenser and its filters, while buildings with vented machines have the duct cleaned under house rules.

HoustonTX · 36 areas

Houston humidity makes lint damp and heavy, so it sticks to the walls of an exhaust duct instead of blowing through, and a yearly lint path and exhaust vent cleaning there keeps drying times short and brings the outside flap back to a clean swing.

ChicagoIL · 50 areas

In Chicagoland basements the dryer exhaust often travels a long way to the rim joist, and in January its outside flap can freeze shut, so lint path and exhaust vent cleaning there clears the whole run and checks the hood after the first hard frost.

Los AngelesCA · 95 areas

Los Angeles houses remodeled several times over often reroute the dryer duct through walls in ways nobody wrote down, and lint path and exhaust vent cleaning there traces the actual path, clears it and replaces any foil or plastic section with rigid metal.

San DiegoCA · 31 areas

San Diego laundry closets tucked into hallways or garages often exhaust through short, crowded ducts, and lint path and exhaust vent cleaning there clears the screen housing and duct and makes sure the outlet is not hidden behind a planter, a fence or a bird's nest.

San Francisco Bay AreaCA · 74 areas

Bay Area flats built long before home dryers often vent them through improvised ducts in light wells or under stairs, and lint path and exhaust vent cleaning there clears those runs, checks their joints and shortens any that wander farther than they need to.

Questions about
the lint path and exhaust vent cleaning.

Is emptying the lint screen after every load not enough?
It is essential, and it is not enough. Some lint always passes the screen and settles in the housing, the duct and the outdoor hood. The annual cleaning covers that part of the path, which a homeowner cannot reach from the laundry room.
Can a roof exhaust be cleaned from inside the house?
Much of it can, with a rotary brush fed up the run. The cap on the roof also needs attention, because its screen or damper can hold lint and nests; that part is done only where it can be reached safely.
Does a condenser or heat pump laundry machine need this service?
It has no duct to the outside, but it has more filters: usually a door lint screen and a second filter in front of the condenser or heat exchanger. Those, and the condenser itself on models that need rinsing, are what the visit cleans instead.
