What DuPage County does
to a home appliance.
Where home appliances sit in DuPage County: older housing stock, built-in and paneled suites, family houses.
All of ChicagoOlder housing stock
In an older home the outlet behind an appliance may be one of only a few on an old circuit, and a maintenance visit notes any cord, plug or outlet that runs warm, since that is a job for an electrician rather than a cleaning.
Built-in and paneled suites
Heavy custom door panels load the hinges of built-in refrigerators and dishwashers over the years, so an upkeep visit checks hinge tension and door alignment, since a door that sags no longer presses its gasket evenly.
Family houses
A family keeps up with its appliances more easily when one visit covers them all, and a written list of filter dates, hose ages and small notes helps the household between visits.

Hinsdale
Hinsdale incorporated on April 1, 1873, and its downtown National Register historic district has stayed largely intact despite many teardowns elsewhere in the village.
Clarendon Hills
Clarendon Hills incorporated in 1924 specifically to avoid annexation by neighboring Hinsdale, and its streets follow the natural contour of the land rather than a grid, modeled on nearby Riverside.
Downers Grove
Downers Grove was founded in 1832 and incorporated in 1873, and its 68 confirmed Sears Kit Homes mark an early-20th-century building wave that now sits alongside one of the area's highest teardown rates.
Elmhurst
Elmhurst incorporated in 1882 and grew from about 14,000 residents in 1930 to over 46,000 by 1970, reflecting the postwar suburban building boom that filled in the city.
Glen Ellyn
Glen Ellyn incorporated in 1896 after mineral springs discovered in 1890 briefly drew visitors as a health resort, and the man-made Lake Ellyn, dammed in 1889, remains the village's namesake feature.
Lisle
Lisle was settled by farming brothers in 1832 but did not incorporate until 1956, after which its population grew from about 4,200 in 1960 to over 22,000 by 2010.
Lombard
Lombard incorporated in 1869 and grew rapidly after the Galena and Chicago Union Railroad arrived in 1848, later becoming known as "The Lilac Village" after Colonel William Plum's 200-variety lilac garden became Lilacia Park in 1927.
Naperville
Naperville incorporated as a village in 1857 but stayed a predominantly rural community until the 1960s, then tripled its population through the 1980s and 90s as employers like Bell Labs and Amoco moved in.
Oak Brook
Oak Brook incorporated as a village only in 1958, and much of its early development followed the 1962 opening of the Oakbrook Center mall on land annexed for the project.
Wheaton
Wheaton became a village in 1859 and a city in 1890, and its downtown saw a wave of condominium and business redevelopment after the county courthouse moved out in 1990.
