What Gold Coast does

The Gold Coast took shape after 1882, when merchant Potter Palmer filled in swampy land that became Lake Shore Drive and built a forty-two-room castle-like mansion designed by Henry Ives Cobb and Charles Sumner Frost.

The district was added to the National Register of Historic Places in 1978, formally protecting its mix of mansions and early apartment buildings.

The neighborhood's first apartment building, the Edward G. Pauling Apartments designed by Dankmar Adler and Louis Sullivan, went up in 1886 and was already demolished by 1913 to make way for larger buildings.

Today the district mixes historic mansions and townhomes with luxury condominiums and cooperative apartments along Lake Shore Drive.
