Appliance maintenance in Lincoln Park.
Lincoln Park greystones and two-flats often keep a shared basement laundry, where two households' machines use one floor drain and one exhaust wall, so maintenance there clears both lint paths and checks the drain and hoses for the whole building.

What Lincoln Park does
to a home appliance.
Part of today's Lincoln Park, on the neighborhood's northern edge, began as the city cemetery in 1843, and by 1864 the city had relocated roughly 35,000 graves to convert the land into parkland and residential lots.
Residents fled into the park for safety during the Great Chicago Fire of 1871, and rebuilding afterward set the pattern for much of the housing that now surrounds it.
The park itself expanded south and then north along seven miles of lakefront between the 1860s and the 1950s, with the residential blocks around it filling in as each stretch was completed.
All of ChicagoOlder housing stock
Plaster walls, floors that are no longer quite level and narrow doorways make an old house hard on appliances, so leveling feet are adjusted, doors are checked for an even seal, and a heavy unit is never pulled out farther than the floor can take.
Family houses
A family keeps up with its appliances more easily when one visit covers them all, and a written list of filter dates, hose ages and small notes helps the household between visits.
Mixed housing
In an older house with a new kitchen the appliances may be modern while the hoses, drains and exhaust runs behind them are old, so upkeep checks what connects to them as carefully as the appliances themselves.

When a home appliance
cannot wait in Lincoln Park.
In Lincoln Park as anywhere, these five signs mean upkeep has waited too long and a hazard has started in the home, so the appliance stays off until it is looked at: a hot or burning-lint smell from the laundry, a gas smell at a cooking appliance, a supply hose leaking or bulging, a burning electrical smell, and a breaker that trips when the appliance runs.
