What SoHo does
to a home appliance.
The SoHo-Cast Iron Historic District, landmarked in 1973 and extended in 2010, covers about 26 blocks and 500 buildings, and it was declared a National Historic Landmark in 1978.
Most residential lofts in the district began as illegal conversions of industrial floors in the 1970s, before the 1982 Loft Law gave those artist-occupied spaces formal rent protection and legal status.
All of New York MetroOlder housing stock
Older houses were not built around modern appliances, and a dryer or a hood there may exhaust through an opening cut decades ago in a thick wall, so upkeep traces that path to the outside and cleans it from end to end.
Tower living
Tower apartments run their appliances in rooms that never open to the weather, so the air conditioning does what the windows cannot, and a refrigerator or wine unit breathing that cooled but dusty air still needs its condenser coil brushed once or twice a year.
Apartments and small homes
In a small kitchen the refrigerator often stands with its back to a wall and its sides boxed in by cabinets, and a maintenance visit there measures the air gap the maker calls for and clears whatever has crept into it before cleaning the coil.

When a home appliance
cannot wait in SoHo.
In SoHo as anywhere, these five signs mean upkeep has waited too long and a hazard has started in the home, so the appliance stays off until it is looked at: a hot or burning-lint smell from the laundry, a gas smell at a cooking appliance, a supply hose leaking or bulging, a burning electrical smell, and a breaker that trips when the appliance runs.
