What Manhattan does
to a home appliance.
Where home appliances sit in Manhattan: tower living, older housing stock, apartments and small homes.
All of New York MetroTower living
Tower apartments run their appliances in rooms that never open to the weather, so the air conditioning does what the windows cannot, and a refrigerator or wine unit breathing that cooled but dusty air still needs its condenser coil brushed once or twice a year.
Older housing stock
Older houses were not built around modern appliances, and a dryer or a hood there may exhaust through an opening cut decades ago in a thick wall, so upkeep traces that path to the outside and cleans it from end to end.
Apartments and small homes
Small homes tend to lean on a single appliance of each kind for everything, one oven, one dishwasher, one washer, and with no spare to fall back on, cleaning filters and checking seals on a schedule matters more than in a bigger house.

Battery Park City
Every home in Battery Park City sits on landfill, more than 3 million cubic yards of soil and rock excavated for the original World Trade Center and other projects, with the fill completed by 1976.
Greenwich Village
The Village's oldest blocks still follow an 18th-century street layout that predates Manhattan's 1811 grid plan, and its housing spans Greek Revival rowhouses from the 1830s through 19th-century tenements to mid-rise prewar apartments.
SoHo
SoHo holds the largest collection of cast-iron building facades in the world, roughly 250 structures citywide with most of them here, built mostly between 1840 and 1880 as commercial and manufacturing space.
Tribeca
Tribeca loft kitchens were fitted into former warehouses, often with long runs for water, drains and exhaust from an island to a far wall, and maintenance there follows those long paths, checking hood ducts and dryer runs wherever they bend.
Upper East Side
Upper East Side apartments run from prewar co-ops to postwar towers, and building rules often limit when a technician may work and whether a dryer can be vented at all, so maintenance there is booked through the building and centers on the filters, seals and screens inside the unit.
Upper West Side
The neighborhood's stately West End Avenue apartment blocks and the townhouses between Amsterdam Avenue and Riverside Drive were mostly built before the Great Depression, in the building boom that followed the 1904 opening of the first subway line.
