What Suffolk County does
to a home appliance.
Where home appliances sit in Suffolk County: seasonal houses, on the water, homes that host.
All of New York MetroSeasonal houses
When the owners return, an opening visit runs each appliance before it is trusted again: water lines flushed, the first ice batch thrown out, the dryer exhaust checked for nests and the drum and door seals wiped of any mildew.
On the water
A home near salt water opens its doors to beach traffic, and sand in towels and on feet ends up in washer drain filters and door seals, which are flushed and wiped more often there than inland.
Homes that host
Refrigerators and ice makers on a patio or pool deck sit in sun, pollen and blown leaves, so their grilles and coils are cleaned more often than a kitchen unit's, and their gaskets are checked after every hot season.

in Suffolk County.

Southampton
Southampton was settled in 1640 by families from Lynn, Massachusetts, and its oldest surviving house, the Halsey House on Main Street, dates to the 17th century, making it one of the oldest documented homes in the state.
Commack
Commack's housing stock is mostly postwar suburban construction, built out along with the rest of central Suffolk County once the Long Island Expressway reached the area in the 1950s and 1960s.
Dix Hills
Dix Hills is an unincorporated hamlet split between the towns of Huntington and Babylon, built out mostly as single-family subdivisions during Long Island's postwar suburban expansion.
East Hampton
East Hampton's town government traces to 1648, making it one of the oldest continuously settled English towns in the state, with a historic district of homes clustered around its old village green.
Huntington
Huntington was founded in 1653 around its natural harbor, and poet Walt Whitman's birthplace still stands there among a town whose housing spans more than three and a half centuries of growth.
Lloyd Harbor
Lloyd Harbor borders Caumsett State Historic Park, the former Marshall Field estate, and the village's low-density zoning keeps most home lots large relative to the rest of Suffolk County.
Northport
Northport grew as a 19th-century shipbuilding village on its harbor, and its downtown still holds Victorian-era houses built for the captains and tradesmen of that era.
Port Jefferson
Port Jefferson's oldest home dates to around 1682, and many of its surviving 19th-century houses once belonged to the shipbuilders and captains who ran Suffolk County's largest shipyard on its harbor.
Smithtown
Smithtown takes its name from Richard Smith, who founded the settlement in 1665, and the town's historic bull statue still marks the legendary boundary he is said to have ridden out on its founding.
Stony Brook
Stony Brook's inland southern section is largely postwar residential construction, while its historic village center, rebuilt from 1939 onward around a colonial-era gristmill, keeps a New England clapboard look.
