What St. Pete Beach does
to a home appliance.

The city itself dates only to a 1957 consolidation of four smaller municipalities, Pass-a-Grille, Don CeSar Place, Belle Vista and St. Petersburg Beach, which won by a five-vote margin.

It kept the longer name St. Petersburg Beach until a 1994 vote shortened it to St. Pete Beach, to set it apart from the city of St. Petersburg across the bay.

As of the 2020 census, 38 percent of the city's 8,036 housing units were counted as vacant, a share driven by seasonal and vacation-home use typical of a barrier-island community.

On the water

Coastal storms drive rain sideways into outside flaps and wall caps, so after a storm a maintenance visit checks the dryer and hood outlets for water, debris and a damper that no longer closes.

Seasonal houses

A caretaker looking in on an empty house can watch for a few upkeep signs, water under the laundry, frost thickening in a freezer or a musty smell from a washer, any of which is worth a call before the owners arrive.

Second units and spares

A second refrigerator or freezer in the garage or basement usually gets less attention than the one in the kitchen, yet it lives in dust and heat, so its coil is cleaned on the same schedule and its gasket checked just as often.

When a home appliance
cannot wait in St. Pete Beach.

In St. Pete Beach as anywhere, these five signs mean upkeep has waited too long and a hazard has started in the home, so the appliance stays off until it is looked at: a hot or burning-lint smell from the laundry, a gas smell at a cooking appliance, a supply hose leaking or bulging, a burning electrical smell, and a breaker that trips when the appliance runs.
