The back of a home laundry pair pulled out from the wall, a short length of rigid metal exhaust duct from the dryer to the wall outlet with a little gray lint at the joint, the dryer unplugged and nobody in the frame.

What AF
actually means.

AF, shown as "Check Vent" on some dryer models, is Whirlpool's restricted-airflow alert. The dryer keeps tumbling while the message shows, which is exactly why it is worth acting on before a real blockage builds up behind it.

What to do when AF shows on the home appliance

Before you book,
in this order.

Each step comes from Whirlpool's own guidance for AF on its home appliances. Follow it to the end: the last card says whether this is a visit.

01

Clean the lint screen fully, then run your hand over it to check nothing is still caught in the mesh.

02

Check whether the vent run from the dryer to the wall is crushed, kinked, or has too many turns.

03

Confirm the exterior vent hood outside the house is free of lint, debris, birds' nests or lint buildup.

04

Run a Timed Dry heated cycle; if AF or Check Vent comes back, book a visit so the full vent run can be checked and cleared.

Still there?

It usually turns into lint path and exhaust vent cleaning. Book with the code and the model number.

What not to do

AF is about airflow through the lint screen and vent, not a heating-element or motor failure. If the dryer runs a full cycle but clothes still come out damp with the vent clear, that points to a different problem worth a visit.

Lint path and exhaust vent cleaning.

Every code on this site is taken from the manufacturer's documentation, never from a forum or a parts listing. Confirmed on Whirlpool's standard dryer line; the compact heat pump dryer instead posts a separate "Door Filter (Lint Screen)" alert for the same kind of blockage, described on its own support page.

Questions
about AF.

Can I clear AF myself?
Clean the lint screen fully, then run your hand over it to check nothing is still caught in the mesh. If it comes back, it needs a visit.
Can I keep using my Whirlpool machine while AF or Check Vent is showing?
The dryer will keep running with the message on screen, but Whirlpool's own guidance is to clear the lint screen and check the full vent run before the restriction gets bad enough to affect drying performance or safety.
I cleaned the lint screen and AF still shows on my Whirlpool machine — what next?
Move to the vent run itself: check for crushed or kinked sections between the dryer and the wall, and make sure the exterior hood outside is not blocked by lint or debris. Whirlpool lists both as common causes beyond the lint screen.
Does AF mean my Whirlpool machine vent was installed wrong?
Not necessarily, but Whirlpool does note that a vent run with too many turns or that exceeds the recommended length for its elbow count can trigger the same alert, which is worth checking against the installation instructions if the message keeps returning.

Back to your everyday

Still showing AF?

A booking goes further when it has the reminder or code as shown, the model number from the rating plate, and a word on when that filter, screen or tub was last cleaned. With those three, the office can pack the right filter or cleaner for your appliance.
