Appliance
Maintenance Code or Reminder Light: Filter, Descale, Vent Check

An appliance maintenance code is a reminder, icon or short code on a display asking for a filter change, descaling, a tub clean, rinse aid or an exhaust check rather than reporting a broken part.

What it
usually means.

Modern appliances track their own upkeep. A refrigerator counts days or gallons since the filter was changed and lights a reminder; a hood counts fan hours and asks for its grease or charcoal filters; a steam oven counts steam cycles and asks to be descaled; a dishwasher shows rinse aid and salt symbols; a front-loading washer counts washes and asks for a tub clean; many laundry machines watch their own airflow and show a vent or exhaust warning when it falls. These are maintenance codes: they clear when the job is done and the reminder is reset, and no part is needed. Other codes report problems that upkeep causes and upkeep fixes, such as a drain that is slow because the filter is full, a warm-temperature alarm on a unit whose coil is clogged or whose door was left open, or a water code from a kinked supply line or a clogged inlet screen. Then there are codes that mean a part has failed: a sensor reading open, a board that failed its self-test, a motor that did not start. Those are repairs, and the sister repair site for that appliance has them by make. The same code means different things on different makes, so the make and model always come first. On this site, codes are grouped into families by what they ask for: reminders, filters, vents and airflow, water, fill and drain, scale and descaling, temperature, sensors, and controls and power.

Answer these first

01

What exactly does the display show: a word, an icon, a letter and number, or a flashing light?

02

Which appliance is it, and what make and model are on its label?

03

Did it appear after a set time or number of cycles, or suddenly in the middle of a cycle?

04

When were the filter, descaling, tub clean or exhaust last done on this appliance?

05

Does it clear after the job and the reset, or come back straight away?

Check these
before you book.

Appliance maintenance code: 5 checks, and none of them costs anything.

01

Photograph the display, or film a flashing light, before you reset or switch anything off.

02

Look the code up for your make and model on this site or in the manual for that exact model.

03

If it is a reminder, do the job it asks for, then reset it the way the manual describes.

Also worth checking

  • For a filter, drain or airflow code, clean the part the code points to with the appliance off and unplugged.
  • If the code returns straight after the job and the reset, book a visit with the photo.

How soon does it need a visit?

Most maintenance codes can wait for a convenient time, since they are reminders. Five situations come first, each with its own page: a burning lint smell, a gas smell, a leaking supply hose, a burning electrical smell and a breaker that trips.

8 things appliance maintenance code or reminder light: filter, descale, vent check turns out to be, from reminders, not failures to controls and power.

The cost guide
  1. 01 no service

    Reminders, not failures

Filter, descale, tub clean, rinse aid and similar reminders count time or use. Do the job, then reset the reminder as the manual describes.

  2. 02 lowest

    Temperature

A warm alarm on cold storage often follows a door left ajar or a clogged coil. Close the door, check the seal, and have the coil cleaned if it is dusty.

  3. 03 low

    Filters

A water, grease or charcoal filter past its life lights a code or icon. The right filter goes in and the counter is reset.

  4. 04 low

    Water, fill and drain

A slow fill from a kinked line or a dirty inlet screen, or a slow drain from a full drain filter, sets a water code. The filter and screens are cleaned and the lines checked.

  5. 05 low

    Scale and descaling

A steam oven, ice maker or coffee system that detects scale, or counts to its interval, asks to be descaled. The maker's routine is run with its product.

  6. 06 low to moderate

    Vents and airflow

A laundry machine that senses restricted exhaust shows a vent or airflow warning. The lint path is cleaned from the screen housing to the outdoor hood.

  7. 07 moderate

    Sensors

A sensor that reads open, shorted or out of range sets a code that upkeep does not clear. It is checked on a visit and, if failed, handed to the sister repair site.

  8. 08 moderate

    Controls and power

A board that fails its self-test or a supply voltage out of range sets a control code. That is a repair for the sister repair site for that appliance.

Questions about
appliance maintenance code or reminder light: filter, descale, vent check.

The filter reminder is on but the filter was changed last month. Why?
Most reminders do not detect the filter; they count time or water. After a change, the reminder has to be reset by a button hold or a menu step, which the manual describes.
Can a vent or airflow warning be ignored if loads still dry?
It should not be. The machine is reporting less airflow than it needs, which is the early form of the blockage that causes lint fires. Clean the lint path before it gets worse.
Will clearing the code without doing the job cause harm?
The reminder will go off, but the filter, scale or lint is still there and keeps building. The appliance works harder until the job is done.
Does a maintenance code mean the appliance needs a repair?
Usually not. Reminders and most filter, drain and airflow codes are cleared by upkeep. Codes for sensors, boards and motors are the exception, and those go to the sister repair site for that appliance.
