Viking clear-ice unit alternating CL and ICE: a cleaning cycle is due
The clear-ice control counts finished ice cycles rather than reading how much scale has actually formed on the evaporator plate, so the CL/ICE swap arrives on the same rough schedule no matter how hard the water is.

What CL / ICE alternating
actually means.
The clear-ice control counts finished ice cycles rather than reading how much scale has actually formed on the evaporator plate, so the CL/ICE swap arrives on the same rough schedule no matter how hard the water is. Ice keeps coming out while the display alternates.

What to do when CL / ICE alternating shows on the home applianceKind of codeReminders, not failures
Nothing has broken; the appliance has been counting hours, cycles or gallons and is asking for its routine care. A refrigerator lights a filter icon after about six months of water, a front-load washer suggests a tub-clean cycle after a set number of loads, a steam oven or a dishwasher asks for descaling or rinse aid, and some dryers remind you to check the exhaust. Do the task the reminder names, reset it the way the manual describes, and write the date in the service record.
Usually leads toNo service
Switch the unit off with its On/Off icon until the display reads OFF, then empty the ice bin.
Shows up asWater or Ice Tasting Stale: Filter Age, Scale and Idle Lines
Water or ice tasting stale is dispenser water, cubes or nugget ice with a flat, musty, chemical or freezer-food taste, often cloudy, slow to come or smaller than it used to be.
MakeViking
Viking kitchens tend to mix heavy gas cooking with built-in cold storage, so a visit splits its time between burner ports and hood filters and the refrigerator's coil.

Before you book,
in this order.
Each step comes from Viking's own guidance for CL / ICE alternating on its home appliances. Follow it to the end: the last card says whether this is a visit.
Switch the unit off with its On/Off icon until the display reads OFF, then empty the ice bin.
Start the built-in clean cycle and pour the cleaning solution slowly onto the evaporator plate as directed.
Let the roughly 45-minute cycle finish, check the plate for leftover buildup, and run it again if any remains.
Book a visit if CL/ICE returns immediately after a completed cycle.
Cleared?
The reminder is gone from the display, the filter, the screen or the tub has been cleaned or swapped, and the appliance runs a full cycle without calling for it again. A clean-filter light or a descale prompt that returns in days rather than months usually means the part it watches is fouling faster than normal, so mention that when you book.
What not to do
The alternating display is a cleaning cue, not a stoppage; production continues until the cycle is actually started. A blank, dark display is a different condition, tied to a drain-pump safety cutoff rather than a cleaning schedule.
