What it
usually means.
A gas burner mixes gas with air before it reaches the ports, and the right mix burns as a steady blue flame with small, even cones all around the head. When the flame turns yellow or orange, lazy or ragged, the mix is off or the gas cannot leave the ports evenly. In a home kitchen the cause is usually something upkeep can fix. Spills that bake into the ports block some of them, so the flame is missing or weak in places. A cap that sits slightly crooked after cleaning makes the flame lift on one side and burn yellow on the other. Water left in a burner head after wiping it sputters and colors the flame until it dries. Kitchen dust, flour and cleaner residue can also color it briefly. Less often, the air shutter on an oven burner has shifted, or a range was set up for natural gas while the house uses propane, or the other way around, which needs the orifices converted. A flame that is steadily yellow wastes gas, leaves soot and can raise carbon monoxide, so it should not be left as it is. Cleaning and seating the burners solves most cases; a valve, regulator or orifice problem is a repair for the sister repair site for that appliance.
The 6 causes, cheapest first
Answer these first
Is the flame yellow all around, only in patches, or lifting away from the head?
Was the cooktop cleaned recently, or did something boil over onto the burner?
Does each cap sit flat and centered on its burner head?
Is there soot on the bottom of pans or on the oven walls?
Does the house use natural gas or propane, and was the appliance ever converted?

Burner flame yellow or uneven: 5 checks, and none of them costs anything.
With every knob off and the burners cold, lift each cap and set it flat and centered on its head.
Look at the ports for baked-on spills, and let any damp burner dry fully before relighting.
Light each burner and watch the flame: steady blue cones all around are the goal.
Also worth checking
- Look for soot on the bottom of pans and inside the oven, which marks a flame that has been yellow for a while.
- Make sure a carbon monoxide alarm is working in the home.
How soon does it need a visit?
A flame that turns yellow for a moment is not urgent. A flame that stays yellow, lifts off the head or leaves soot should be looked at within a few days; stop using that burner in the meantime. Any gas smell is urgent: leave and call from outside.

6 things burner flame yellow or uneven: ports, caps and the air mix turns out to be, from water or cleaner left in the burner to wrong orifices or a regulator problem.
The cost guide-
01 no service
Water or cleaner left in the burner
A head that was wiped and put back wet sputters and burns orange. Let the burner dry fully with the knob off, and avoid soaking the igniter when cleaning.
-
02 no service
Cap sitting crooked on the head
A cap that is off-center by a few degrees makes an uneven, lifting flame. With the burner off and cold, lift it and set it flat and centered so it does not rock.
-
03 low
Ports blocked by baked spills
Boil-overs bake into the small ports and block them. The heads are cleaned and each port cleared with a straight pin, never a toothpick that can snap off inside.
-
04 low
Grease and dust from a clogged hood
A hood that no longer pulls leaves grease and dust hanging over the cooktop, where it settles on burners and colors the flame. The filters are cleaned so the air moves again.
-
05 low to moderate
Oven burner air shutter shifted
The shutter that sets the air on an oven or broiler burner can move over time. It is checked and set so the flame burns blue and steady.
-
06 moderate
Wrong orifices or a regulator problem
An appliance set up for natural gas running on propane, or the reverse, or a regulator that has failed, gives a wrong flame everywhere. That is a repair for the sister repair site for that appliance.
