Hood Fan Weak or Noisy: Grease Filters, Blower Wheel and Duct

A hood fan that is weak or noisy pulls little smoke or steam off the cooktop, roars, rattles or whistles, often after months of cooking without the filters being cleaned.

What it
usually means.

A kitchen hood, whether it is a wall or island canopy, an insert under a cabinet, a downdraft rising behind the cooktop or a microwave over it, moves air through a set of grease filters, past a blower and out through a duct or back into the room through charcoal. Its strength depends on all of those staying clear. Mesh filters load with grease until air struggles through them; baffle filters fill their troughs; charcoal pads saturate and stop removing smell. With the filters clogged, the blower pulls less, grease slips past and coats the blower wheel, which throws it off balance and makes it louder. The duct damper can stick half closed with grease or flutter, and a long, bending duct makes any problem worse. A hood that is weak at the start of a sear and loud on high usually needs filters and a cleaning, not a part. The upkeep fix is filters degreased or replaced, charcoal renewed, the reachable blower and housing cleaned, and the damper freed. If the motor hums without turning, the bearings grind or the speeds no longer switch, the motor or the control has failed; that is a repair for the sister range hood or microwave repair site.

Answer these first

01

When were the grease filters last cleaned, and does the hood recirculate through charcoal?

02

Does smoke rise into the hood or hang over the cooktop?

03

Is the noise a roar, a rattle, a whistle or a grinding sound?

04

Outside, does the duct cap flap open when the fan runs?

05

Do all the speeds and the lights still work?

Check these
before you book.

Hood fan weak or noisy: 5 checks, and none of them costs anything.

01

Switch the hood off, take down the grease filters and hold them to the light to see how much passes through.

02

Wash metal filters in hot soapy water or in the dishwasher if the maker allows, and let them dry before refitting.

03

On a recirculating hood, check when the charcoal pads were last replaced.

Also worth checking

  • Run the fan on each speed and listen for rattles that point to a loose filter or part.
  • Outside, watch the duct cap: it should open when the fan runs and close when it stops.

How soon does it need a visit?

A weak or noisy hood can wait for a scheduled visit. Book within a week or two, and sooner if there is a burning smell, grease dripping from the hood or the motor hums without turning.

The causes,
cheapest first.

6 things hood fan weak or noisy: grease filters, blower wheel and duct turns out to be, from fan speed too low for the cooking to motor or speed control failing.

The cost guide
  1. 01 no service

Fan speed too low for the cooking

A low speed cannot keep up with a sear or a wok. Turn the fan on a few minutes before cooking and use the higher speeds while pans are hot.

  2. 02 low

    Grease filters clogged

Loaded mesh or baffle filters choke the airflow. They are degreased in a hot solution, or replaced when bent or gummed beyond cleaning.

  3. 03 low

    Charcoal pads saturated

On a recirculating hood or microwave, spent charcoal stops removing smell and adds resistance. The pads are replaced on the maker's schedule.

  4. 04 low to moderate

    Grease on the blower wheel

Grease past the filters coats the blower, making it heavy, unbalanced and loud. The reachable wheel and housing are cleaned with the power off.

  5. 05 low to moderate

    Damper stuck or duct restricted

A damper held half closed by grease, a crushed duct or a blocked outside cap stops air leaving. The damper is freed and the path checked as far as it can be reached.

  6. 06 moderate

    Motor or speed control failing

A motor that hums, grinds or runs at one speed only, or a control that no longer responds, needs a part. That is a repair for the sister range hood or microwave repair site.

Questions about
hood fan weak or noisy: grease filters, blower wheel and duct.

How can I tell whether the hood filters are clogged?
Hold a clean filter up to the light and you see through it easily; a loaded one looks dark and feels sticky. If water beads and sits on it when rinsed, the grease layer is thick.
Why is the hood louder with new filters in place?
A filter that is not seated in its clips can rattle or whistle. Push each one fully home. If the noise stays, the blower or the damper is the likely source.
Does a downdraft vent need the same upkeep?
Yes. It has grease filters at the top of the vent and a blower below the counter, and it works against rising heat, so clean filters matter even more.
Should the hood be run after cooking is finished?
For a few minutes, yes. It clears steam and odors and lets the filters and the duct dry. Some hoods have a delay setting that switches off on its own.
