What the grease filter and hood fan service
involves.

The hood over a cooktop, or the microwave that does the hood's job, works only as well as the filters between the cooking and the fan. Mesh filters load with a sticky film of grease; baffle filters channel it into a trough that needs emptying; recirculating models add a charcoal pad that absorbs odors until it is saturated and has to be replaced. Once filters clog, the blower pulls less air, grease gets past into the fan housing and the duct, the motor runs hotter and the noise rises. Smoke from a sear hangs over the cooktop instead of lifting. This service restores the airflow. The filters are taken down and degreased in a hot solution, or replaced when their mesh is bent, torn or permanently gummed. Charcoal pads are changed on the schedule the maker gives. With the power off, the fan housing and the blower wheel that the owner can reach are wiped down, the lights are checked, and a ducted hood has its damper checked for free movement so air can leave and cold air cannot fall back in. The hood is then run on each speed and the draw is checked with the filters back in place, and the date is written into the log.

03

Wipe the fan housing and the reachable blower, check the lights, and change the charcoal pads on a recirculating model.

Questions about
the grease filter and hood fan service.

Can metal hood filters be washed with the dishes?
Many metal mesh and baffle filters can go in the dishwasher, and their makers say so; some discolor on the first few washes, which is cosmetic. Charcoal pads cannot be washed. The hood's manual says which filters it has and how to clean them.
How often does a charcoal pad in a recirculating hood need changing?
Commonly every three to six months with regular cooking, and on some models a reminder light counts the hours. A saturated pad stops removing smell long before it looks different.
Why does the hood still sound loud with clean filters?
Noise can come from a blower wheel coated with grease past the filters, a damper that flutters, loose mounting or a long, bending duct. The visit checks the parts the owner can reach; a worn motor bearing is a repair.
