What the dish care filter and spray arm cleaning
involves.

Most dishwashers now rely on a manual filter at the bottom of the tub to keep food out of the spray, and the maker's manual expects the owner to clean it. Many never do, because nobody mentioned it when the machine was installed. When the filter clogs, the pump recirculates dirty water, grit and scraps land on the upper rack, and the tub starts to smell. The spray arms above it have their own problem: seeds, bits of label, glass chips and scale lodge in the nozzles, and one blocked hole leaves the same plates dirty every load. This service takes care of both, and of the other small parts that decide wash results. The lower rack comes out, the filter assembly is lifted out and cleaned with a soft brush under warm water, and the sump below it is wiped clear. The spray arms are taken off where the design allows, flushed and their nozzles cleared with a plastic pick. The door gasket and the lower seal are cleaned, the rinse aid and detergent dispensers are checked, the drain hose is traced to see that it has its high loop or air gap, and the disposer's splash guard is cleaned when it shares the drain. A short cycle proves the result.

Questions about
the dish care filter and spray arm cleaning.

Is there really a filter to clean in a dish care machine that is only a few years old?
Almost certainly. Most current models use a manual filter under the lower spray arm, and the manual asks for it to be cleaned about once a month. It twists out by hand and goes back with a click or a quarter turn.
Can the spray arms be taken off without tools?
On many models they unclip or unscrew by hand; the manual shows how. If an arm does not come off easily, the nozzles can still be cleared in place with a toothpick, and a stuck arm is left for the visit rather than forced.
Does running the kitchen tap before a cycle make a difference?
It helps when the machine is far from the water heater. The first water to arrive is otherwise cold, and a cold start makes detergent work less well. Run the hot tap until it is warm, then start the cycle.
